One of Housing Squamish’s core mandates is ensuring that everyone has access to affordable housing in a community they love and cherish. With this goal at the forefront, we aim to continue as the District of Squamish’s trusted housing partner through strategic partnerships, development, acquisitions, and operations.
Last month, we had the opportunity to meet with the District of Squamish Council to showcase our achievements and demonstrate how we are maximizing housing investments and opportunities across all levels of government. Our shared vision is to build and invest in affordable housing that will serve the community now and for generations to come. During the meeting, we also presented our five-year action plan, outlining a strong partnership with the District to ensure long-term housing success.
Key Highlights from the Five-Year Strategic Plan
To close the community-wide housing gap in Squamish, Housing Squamish’s strategic plan focuses on building, acquiring, and managing below-market housing while moving toward financial self-sufficiency. As part of this plan, we requested $2.325 million in funding over the next five years.
Key elements of the strategic plan include:
- Delivering over 300 affordable housing units by 2029.
- Attracting and leveraging more than $150 million in partner resources to support housing development in Squamish.
District Support and Ongoing Partnership
During the meeting, Councillor Jenna Stoner noted: “I have seen the amount of work that the staff and volunteers at Housing Squamish have put in to drive one of the most critical components in our community, which is affordable housing. The most recent acquisition of Tantalus Manor in collaboration with Hiy̓ám̓ Housing was no small feat and makes a huge difference to those living in that building.
A five-year partnership agreement is not only important for the stability of this organization, but it also signals that we are serious about supporting this organization.”
In less than two years, Housing Squamish has transformed an initial $900K investment from the District into an impressive $11 million in housing investments for Squamish. We are excited to continue this momentum through our ongoing partnership with the District and look forward to their continued support in facilitating the development approvals process.
We look forward to building on this success and ensuring affordable housing remains accessible to all who call Squamish home.
