In an exciting move for Squamish residents, Housing Squamish and Hiy̓ám̓ ta Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Housing Society (Hiy̓ám̓ Housing) have successfully purchased Tantalus Manor, a 40-unit apartment building in the heart of Squamish. Thanks to support from the Province’s Rental Protection Fund, this partnership ensures affordable housing remains within reach for local families, seniors, and essential workers.
Tantalus Manor, located at 1098 Wilson Crescent, sits in a vibrant, well-connected neighbourhood, close to schools, transit, and other essential amenities. The majority of units in the building are two- and three-bedroom apartments, making it perfect for families. Current rents are about 50% below market rates, making it a vital asset for affordable housing in Squamish.
“This purchase will ensure that vital affordable housing will remain affordable and accessible for current and future tenants,” says Sarah Ellis, Executive Director of Housing Squamish. “We are pleased to partner with Hiy̓ám̓ Housing so that together we can provide housing options for families and seniors who live, work and play in Squamish now and in the future.”
Housing Squamish will manage the property, taking charge of the building’s operations and any necessary upgrades, all while keeping rent below market rates. Hiy̓ám̓ Housing will provide financial and operational support, marking the first step in this partnership to strengthen affordable housing options in the region. Hiy̓ám̓ will have first right to select tenants when vacancies arise in the building.
“This collaboration is a huge leap forward in our mission to secure housing for Squamish Nation members,” said Donalene Rapada from Hiy̓ám̓ Housing. “Our goal is to ensure that more of our members have a place to call home here in Squamish, whether they’re staying or returning to Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw.”
This partnership was made possible through significant support from the Rental Protection Fund, which contributed over $4.6 million in equity and more than $1 million in grants for building improvements. It’s a move that not only preserves affordable housing for today but also secures it for the future.
With the purchase of Tantalus Manor, Housing Squamish and Hiy̓ám̓ Housing are taking a meaningful step toward a more inclusive and accessible housing market in Squamish. It’s all about community and making sure that families and individuals can continue to live, work, and thrive in the place they call home.
