Squamish is once again participating in the Point-in-Time Homeless Count, The count provides a snapshot of people who don’t have a place to pay rent in our community in a 24-hour period. This is part of a province-wide initiative that measures homelessness in many communities. In 2021, 107 people were identified as experiencing homelessness in Squamish, and that number rose to119 in 2023.
Why is it important?
The count provides valuable insights into the demographic characteristics, services used, and challenges faced by those who do not have a place to call home. This data helps shape funding and services in Squamish.
How does it work?
On the designated day, volunteers go around the community, offering a survey to individuals experiencing homelessness. The questionnaire gathers demographic details, as well as information about their housing situation, experiences, and specific needs.
When is it?
- The Squamish Homeless Count takes place on April 15, 2025.
- Start time: 12:00 am
- End time: 11: 59 pm
- Locally organized by the Squamish Helping Hands Society.
How you can help
Encourage anyone you know who is unsheltered, temporarily housed, or facing housing instability (such as couch surfing, sleeping in a vehicle, or in a tent etc.) to participate in the survey. Many feel shame about coming forward, but the survey takers are non-judgmental. Anyone can end up homeless, often through no fault of their own.
People can visit Under One Roof or PearlSpace that day to complete the survey.
